in motion Workplaces

Congratulations to the following in motion workplaces for making a commitment to improving the health of their employees:

County of Huron
Festival Hydro
Huron Perth Catholic District School Board
Listowel Wingham Hospital Alliance
Perth District Health Unit

They have all developed a plan to guide their activities and have already used several of our programs and resources to get their employees “in motion”.

What is an in motion workplace?

An in motion workplace is one that values the health of employees and sees the benefits of physical activity. It creates a supportive environment so employees can be more physically active.

This may be achieved through a combination of activities:
- Educate your employees about the benefits of physical activity.
- Make physical activity opportunities more accessible for employees e.g. organize a walking group or install bike racks at your workplace.
- Provide opportunities for employees to learn different skills e.g. hold a lunchtime yoga class.
- Develop policies that support employees’ choice to be physically active e.g. allow flexible work hours so employees can incorporate physical activity into their workday.

As a workplace, you may already be doing things to increase your employees’ level of physical activity – that’s great! Why not become an in motion workplace, and get recognition for your efforts?

Why promote physical activity in the workplace?

Most adults spend more than half of their waking hours at work. This makes it an ideal setting and practical way for many adults to become more active.

Becoming an in motion workplace and promoting physical activity has many benefits for both employers and employees.  However a workplace that ignores the importance of physical activity may show:

- Increased absenteeism
- decreased productivity and effectiveness of work
- decreased employee morale
- poor corporate image
- poor recruitment and retention of employees
- increased illness, injury and disease
- increased costs associated with employee absenteeism and turnover
- increased injury and disability insurance

An employee that does not become “in motion” may have:
- a poor ability to cope with stress
- less stamina
- reduced job satisfaction
- increased incidence of illness
- a lower sense of wellbeing
