Our vision: That every person in Huron and Perth Counties achieves health benefits through physical activity.
Our mission: Huron-Perth in motion is a group of community partners working together to have all citizens in Huron and Perth Counties integrate regular physical activity into every facet of their daily lives.
Our goal: To increase the level of physical activity among adults and children in Huron and Perth Counties who are not physically active on a regular basis to 30 minutes of activity per day at least 5 days per week.
Why do we need to be "in motion"?
In Huron and Perth Counties only about half of residents aged 12 and over are active or moderately active in leisure time (meaning they do the equivalent of walking at least 30 minutes per day). More than half of adults are overweight or obese and heart disease is the number one cause of death. In addition, 90% of children and youth are not getting the 90 minutes of physical activity they need everyday for healthy growth and development and over one quarter of them are overweight or obese.
Regular participation in sports among Canadians aged 15 and over declined from 45% in 1992 to 28% in 2005. While over 90% of Canadian parents say that public facilities and programs are available, only one-quarter indicate that they use these facilities often or very often and only one-third report using community parks and outdoor spaces often or very often.
Regular physical activity has a number of physical and mental health benefits. Being inactive on the other hand, is a risk factor for heart disease and stroke, overweight and obesity, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, depression, colon cancer and premature death.
We hope you will support our efforts to get Huron and Perth “in motion”
In motion is an inclusive strategy which aims to reach all corners of the community and to reach people in all facets of their daily life – where they live, work, learn and play. In motion has the potential to dramatically improve the health of our community. It also provides an opportunity for community development.
At a time when the public, media, and health professionals all recognize that inactivity and obesity are at epidemic proportions, the in motion initiative has proven to positively change physical activity levels and health behaviours through its combination of health promotion, targeted strategies, capacity building, and partnerships.
To achieve higher levels of physical activity in our communities, citizens need to be encouraged to be active where they live, work, learn and play.
What is in motion?
In motion is a health promotion model developed by the Saskatoon Regional Health Authority and successfully implemented over the last eight years, resulting in a sustained increase in physical activity rates from 36% of the population to 50% who are active on a regular basis. The Wellington–Dufferin-Guelph regional collaborative purchased the rights to in motion to guide the planning process and to brand the initiative. in motion is now being adapted to our local region.
In motion offers a model for successful collaboration, the most powerful tool available to tackle the challenge of increasing physical activity rates across a region, along with specific strategies and tools to target the following groups: children and youth, older adults, workplaces, physicians (as educators), inactive adults and adults at risk of diabetes. In addition, in motion provides ready-made templates for conducting social marketing and education campaigns.
In motion has received national and international recognition for its’ success in mobilizing large segments of the population. It is an innovative approach as no other policy changes nor mechanisms have made significant changes in the public’s behaviour around physical activity.
